COVID-19 Update
by posted 03/17/2020

Good evening, MDLL Families.  In this ever-changing environment, I am writing to give you an update on where we are as a league and what to expect over the next few weeks.

As I mentioned in my last communication, Little League International has asked all affiliated leagues to fully suspend activities through April 6th.  Today, Fairfax County decided to close all county parks, libraries, and community facilities for two weeks.  This includes fields, like those we use, for which organizations hold permits.

Obviously, the health and safety of our players and families are of paramount importance.  In a meeting this evening of our Operations Group, we have agreed that given the circumstances, we are working to the following schedule:

  • All activities related to our league and our teams and players remain suspended until otherwise directed.  This means that managers and coaches cannot gather players together for any practices, drills, etc.
  • We are currently planning to have our first games on April 18th, with practices possibly starting April 13th.  Obviously, this all is dependent upon Little League International guidance and availability of fields based on county guidance.
  • We will form teams and notify parents as to team assignments in the next week or so.  That said, our scheduler will not take requests for practice schedules until we have more clarity on field availability.  We also ask for your cooperation in staying off the fields where we normally practice and play (after all, they are closed).
  • Uniforms will not be handed out until the week before the first games at the earliest.
  • We will hold a few virtual meetings with managers and coaches over the next several weeks in order to ensure they are aware of changes and the impact on their teams and to allow them (and us) to be ready to take the fields as soon as it is safe to do so.  This will also include coordinating equipment exchanges and pickups.
  • Unless we receive different guidance from Little League International, we will plan on developing a minimum 12-game schedule for AA, AAA, and Majors Divisions, with final games on May 30/31.  We will schedule games for Memorial Day weekend.

As stated at the beginning of this message, this is a very fluid and uncertain situation that will have several changes.  For example, we are aware that the CDC released a recommendation this evening saying that a ban on gatherings of more than 50 people should go into effect for the next 8 weeks, or until mid-May.  This would obviously have a significant impact on our Spring Season, should Little League International adopt such guidance.

Again, the safety and health of our players and our MDLL community are of paramount importance.  We greatly appreciate your support to the league and your patience and flexibility as we prepare for the season, while closely monitoring changes day-to-day.

Stay safe and healthy.

Tim
